Andy MacPhail, the new baseball boss of my beloved Orioles, seems to be taking his time in finding a new manager for the club. With Sam Perlozzo fired last month and Dave Trembley filling in as interim manager, the club made an attempt to hire Joe Girardi, but he turned the Orioles down. The question now is: who’s next? Should the Orioles wait until after the season to find a new manager or should they keep the guy who is keeping the seat warm right now?
From what I have seen over the last twenty games, Trembley seems to be doing ok. I haven’t heard or read of any grumbling in the clubhouse, much like it was when Perlozzo was the man in charge. The Orioles do seem to be making more of an effort on the field and right now, Trembley’s record as manager is 10-10. .500 ball is what the fans were told to expect, or at least hope for this season. It will be interesting to see what MacPhail does regarding the manager’s position. I think he should just sit tight and let Trembley finish the season. It’s not necessarily out of the question that he could be the right man for the job. It’s not as if the Orioles are going anywhere in October, so give the man a chance to see if he can do the job. If the Orioles falter, then look for someone else. If they manage to stay at the .500 level or above, then the job should be his. I think it’s good that the Orioles are taking their time with this. It may turn out that Girardi’s rejection may be another good break for the O’s.
UPDATE: After posting this item, I found this coulumn in Friday’s Baltimore Sun. Rick Maese agrees with me.
